Training
I offer education in the direct method of Myofascial Release
(MFR) skillfully
developed by Dr Rolf and refined for the use of a broader population of
therapists by myself, Michael Stanborough.
Approach
My approach to education in
this rewarding and effective approach to soft tissue therapy occurs
in a series of 3 MFR classes. Three one-day graduate classes in areas
of
special interest are also offered.
Philosophy
My philosophy is that release
and decompression of patterns of restriction are part of an organic process,
something that does not
have to be forced but only encouraged. While these classes are rich in
useful techniques I also foreground the attitude of the therapist
as
being a central resource in the therapeutic exchange. In fact I
emphasize the quality of non-aggressive touch in every aspect of my
trainings.

Listening, therapeutic warmth and
presence are taught as
integral aspects of fascial release.
Please note: these are not classes in conventional deep tissue work.
Cranial Sacral
Balancing (CSB)
CSB works seamlessly with direct method
MFR to create deeper and more stable states of release and integration.
It's been my clinical observation for nearly 20 years that many musculoskeletal
problems that respond well to MFR will resolve more
fully when CSB is included in therapy. Palpating and "listening" to
the fluid tides and subtle bony movements of the cranial system are two
of the best ways to foster therapeutic intention that is open, kind and
non-aggressive.
I provide a number of other resources for the student
of direct technique MFR including my book, Direct Technique Myofascial
Release
(Churchill Livingstone) and a series of DVDs that systematically cover
the material in the book.
